  KR is Going Green...

Updates for

Monday June 7th- Thursday June 10th

Reminders:

Our closing ceremony will take place on Thursday June 10th at 10:30 in the rec center. All are welcome to join us.

Our closing ceremony is our last day of school. You will take your kindergartener home with you when you leave the rec center.

  • Conferences will take place on Friday June 11th and  Monday June 14th If you can' make the time arranged for you please email me or call the school.

  • Due to safety issues, you are not to take your child when you or a family member comes to guest read. If you are taking them home in carline you will have to go in carline and retrieve your child through carline.

Envelopes and Labels

It is extremely important that everything that comes to school be labeled. Everything from schoolbags to shoes. This will ensure that all items find their way to their proper home. Envelopes are essential for any communication from home and school, to make sure all items are properly received. All monies and messages are to be sent in envelopes.

Birthdays

Everyday is special, but birthdays are even more so. We will celebrate birthdays on the actual date, or the closest possible date available. (Summer birthdays will be celebrated on a designated day.) We welcome cookies, cupcakes or some other small treat. Please try to avoid anything with peanuts for the sake of children who are allergic to them. I will send an email if there are other allergies within the class. If you are planning a party outside the classroom for your child please do not send in invitations to school UNLESS, ALL boys or ALL girls are invited. This will save from having any hurt feelings.

Child of the Week

Each week or so we will be highlighting a ‘special’ child. When it’s your child’s turn, I ask that you please prepare a poster board with pictures of your child during important times in his/her life- ex. coming home from the hospital, at Baptism, vacation, etc. Write a sentence explaining the event under each photo. This does not need to be elaborate. It will be on display for the class as well as in the hallway for the school community to view. Wednesday your child will bring in a show and tell (this item has two rules: It can not be alive, It has to fit in your backpack.) and Friday your child will bring a book for me to read at morning message.

Recess

Recess is a fun time at school. Please pack a small separate snack. Please put this in your child’s folder or backpack, NOT THE LUNCH BOX so it does not get confused with the lunch. Do not include a drink, each child is provided with their own cup which they will use to retrieve water when needed from our restroom. If you would like your child to purchase a pretzel for snack, please put .50 cents in a separate, labeled envelope.

Lunch

There is an opportunity to purchase lunch on a daily basis. This money needs to be in a separate, labeled envelope that is to be placed in the folder. A price list will be coming home soon via brown envelope.  Please provide your children with a placemat or cloth napkin to keep their area clean on the lunch tables. Counter money is also used to purchase snacks and drinks and should be in a separate labeled envelope then lunch money.

Family Envelope

These will soon become part of the past as we are becoming apart of the paperless society. However until then, every Wednesday, the youngest child in each family will receive the “Family Envelope”. This is a very important communication from the office. The contents should be read and the outside of the envelope should be signed. Please return it the next morning. I will also be sending weekly communications to you on Mondays via email or website.

Dismissals

The first few weeks of school can be very hectic and confusing. Please make sure that your child is properly labeled and informed. You will receive a nametag when you come to visit; please put the mode of transportation on the back of the tag and your child must wear this for the first two weeks of school. If your child is ever going home by any other way other than the usual routine, please send a note telling me of the new plan. If no note is received, your child will be held to the usual routine. If plans change during the day please send me an email and call the office of the school at 610-279-3345 and let Mrs. Cissone know.

Emergency Dismissals

These include snow days as well as any other emergencies that would cause the school to close. In your first brown envelope you will receive a purple paper, please fill this out as soon as possible and return to school.

Adjustments

Kindergarten can be a very exciting time for everyone but it is also a time of many changes. Everyone has to become familiar with a new, “big” school, more structure and a longer day. This may take time. Please allow your child a few weeks to go through this adjustment phase. If there are still difficulties, please don’t hesitate to contact me and together we can solve any problems.

Homework

There will be homework in kindergarten on a fairly regular basis. You will receive an overview of the week’s activities, including homework assignments, each Monday on our class website. I will not be sending home assignments on paper it is all done through our class website and emails.

Guest Reader

Kindergarten invites parents, grandparents, and special friends to participate in this exciting program. Every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday a guest reader will come and share two or three favorite books. This is a brief session that starts at 2:20 in the afternoon and is a fabulous way to end our day. A special list will be circulated for volunteer

Earth Day!!!

Here is the secret formula

Combine in Bowl 1:  1 part water and 3 or 4 parts glue (for instance, 1 cup water and three cups glue) .

You want the glue to be watery, but not soup.  If you put in too much water, just add more glue. If it doesn't look like it is any runnier than it was before, add a LITTLE bit more water. Add a few drops of food coloring (this will be your slime's color) and MIX.  Mix until you have a nice even looking mixture (no globs of white glue).  Set Aside.

Combine in Bowl 2 :  2 cups of waters and 3 teaspoons of Borax (laundry Aisle of Wal-Mart (not the Super Wal-Mart's though).  Borax in a laundry booster and is also a catalyst in this reaction.  What it does is it causes the glue molecule to link up and form a polymer (a chain of molecules that are all the same).  Rubber is a very common polymer (with similar properties as slime).  The Borax does not become part of the slime.  It just makes the glue molecule behave in a different way.  Mix up the solution.  You know you have it right when you see particles of Borax in the bottom of the bowl that will not dissolve (go into solution).  You have now made a saturated solution of Borax.

SLOWLY pour the glue solution into the Borax solution.  Try to pour it not in a blob, but kind of around in a swirl.  The Borax needs to touch the glue solution to change it, so the more "spread out" the glue is, the faster it will turn to slime.  DON'T stir it.  Put your hands into the solution and start squishing and squeezing the glue mixture, which is turning into slime.  Notice that when you first start, it is sticky and runny, but the more you work it, the less sticky and less runny it becomes.

After a few minutes, take the glue/slime glob out of the bowl and put it on a plate. Continue to work it, popping the bubble that may appear and squishing it until it is all slime (you will know :)).

Play with it.  See if it bounces.  Take a piece of a different color and mix it with yours and see what happens.  Break it and see how long it takes to repair.

Store in a sealed plastic bag to prevent it form drying out (the water in the slime will evaporate if left in the open air)

Enjoy.
