First Grade Opening Newsletter September 8, 2011 Dear Parents,
Welcome back to school! I hope your summer was very enjoyable. I am looking forward to working with your child this year. I hope to make this school year a very challenging and exciting one. To help make this school year a successful one, I list below some opening day instructions. Please keep this newsletter throughout the year for reference. **Friday, September 9: 12:00 Dismissal
School Supplies Please bring your school bag and pencil case with 2 sharpened pencils and an eraser on Friday. All other supplies, listed below should be sent to school on Monday, September 12. Please be sure to put your child’s name on all of the materials.
- 1 pencil case containing extra pencils - 1 little pencil sharpener which catches the pencil shavings (Thank you!) - 3 pocket folders - Magic Markers - 1 box of crayons – Please, no more than a 24- pack. - 1 old T-shirt for messy art activities- please, be sure your name is on it. - 1 glue stick (for cut and paste activities) - 1 bottle of Elmer’s School Glue - 1 box of tissues (for classroom use during the year) - 1 container of CLOROX wipes (for classroom use during the year) - 1 roll of paper towels Also, - 1 Activity book- for use during rainy day recesses. - 1 or 2 picture books – Your child should always have an extra book in his/her desk everyday. There will be a silent reading period during the school day. Fee for School Supplies Already Provided
Please send $13.35 in an envelope marked “School Supplies” with your child’s name on it by Monday, September 19. This will cover the cost of 3 copybooks, an art box, scissors, and a subscription to Weekly Reader and Science Spin which have been provided for your child’s use. Please send the art fee of $15.00 in cash OR by way of a SEPARATE check made out to Saint Helena School in a separate envelope labeled (Art Money). All checks should be made out to Saint Helena School. Please be sure the envelopes sent in with your child have my name on them also, so they are not mistakenly sent to the office. I record your name when the money has been sent to school. Thank you.
-$1.00 – art box already purchased for your child’s use in the classroom -$5.55 – 3 copybooks at $1.85 each -$2.00 – scissors -$4.80- fee for subscription to Weekly Reader (a current events newspaper) & Science Spin -$15.00 – Art Fee Books Books will be sent home to be covered the next few nights and week. Please write your child’s first and last name on all books sent home on the label or space provided. Please cover all workbooks with clear contact. Copybooks do not need to be covered, although they do seem to last longer when covered. The books are easily recognizable and well protected in this manner. As we receive additional workbooks for the children, they will be sent home to be covered as well.
Dismissal All children must be dismissed in line. Please do not come into the building at dismissal time. Children will not be permitted to take alternate forms of transportation than what you have stated on the last page of this letter, unless I receive a note stating a change in transportation. If you forget a note, please call the office and I will get the message. If your child is visiting someone else after school, I would like a note from both children’s parents. Please include the transportation to be used. This is for your child’s protection. Please note- a child may not ride on any other district’s bus than the one in which he/she lives. (ex. If your child lives in the Methacton School District, he/she may not ride on a Wissahickon bus. These are the districts’ rules.)
T-Folder The T-Folder is what I use to send home classroom information, notes, tests, etc. Please make sure the T-Folders are returned to me, along with all tests and quizzes signed by you, by the next day.
H- Folder The H- Folder will be sent home every night. Worksheets completed during each day will also be contained in the H- Folder. The completed pages may be kept at home. Homework should be returned by the next day.
Homework Procedures Homework for the week will be posted on our class’ page on the SHS website. Any loose homework sheets your child needs to complete will be placed in the H folder by your child. All homework must be completed every night. Your child’s homework will provide reinforcement of daily work and will nurture a sense of responsibility in your child. Please sign your child’s homework every night. Your signature on all homework is an indication to me it has been supervised and done neatly and completely. If you observe your child having a problem with his/her homework, please inform me with a note. Your child is responsible for turning in their homework each day. Homework should take about 30 minutes to complete each night.
Math Facts Please review the assigned work each night. I strongly suggest you purchase or make flash cards to be reviewed with your child. Mastery of these math facts is very important.
Absence A note must be brought in the day of your child’s return stating the date of absence and the reason for absence. This letter is in addition to calling the school on the day your child is absent. If you foresee your child being absent for a long period of time, please contact me well in advance. Missed work will be sent home, on the day your child returns, to be completed with you at home.
Discipline I will give you a call or write you a note to inform you if I find your child being a disturbance to other children or if their work is not being completed. Please let me know if your child is going through something unusual at home so I am aware and may act accordingly.
Scholastic Books When you order books from the book company, please send only a check made payable to Scholastic Book Club with your order. Do not make the checks payable to me or to the school. Please do not send cash.
Lunch Lunch will be a new experience for some children. A note in their lunch box once in awhile can make this easier for some children. All lunch money must be placed in an envelope with your child’s name on it. Loose money is lost very easily. Please be sure to separate hot lunch money from juice, ice cream and chips money. One envelope is for hot lunch and one envelope or change purse is for juice, etc. money. I will only collect hot lunch money each morning. Thank you.
Snacks Pretzels are sold everyday at 10:15 A.M. recess. A pretzel is $.50. Children are welcome to buy a pretzel or bring in their own nutritious snack.
Physical Education Your child’s Gym day is Tuesday. Children wear their gym clothes to school on that day.
Birthdays Birthdays are always welcome. There are 28 children in Grade 1-B. Please choose a simple treat. I would ask you to not send in juice, or whole cakes as a snack. Please make sure the treats are already in individual pieces (cupcakes, cookies, brownies, donuts, etc.). Please write a note telling me when you would like the class to celebrate your child’s birthday. Please supply napkins, if needed, for the class. If you are having a party for your child at home, you may send invitations into school provided they are for all of the girls or all of the boys or the whole class. If some of the children are not invited, please send the invitations by mail. A whole school directory will be provided by the Home and School Association.
Show and Tell Please do not allow your child to bring any kinds of toys to school. There will not be a show and tell period in first grade.
Names Please place your child’s name on everything, especially all of the gym clothing and school sweaters.
Please keep this newsletter for future reference.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Denise Britt
