Varsity started the year with a 0-0
tie vs St. Eleanor (White). The self dubbed "Wagdogs" dominated play
but just missed pushing one across the line. Andrew Shieve had an
outstanding game at striker and forced the St. Eleanor keeper to
make some tough saves. Brendan Koch received player of the game
honors for his control of midfield. Conall Loughlin recorded the
shutout in goal.
St Helena continued it's stingy
defense with a 0-0 tie vs. Sacred Heart, the team that dumped them
from the tournament in 2007. The defensive effort was led by Sam
McKenzie in goal with Evan Holder sweeping. David Matazzo, Chip
Byrne, and Chase Tantalo also played key roles on defense. Conall
Loughlin and Molly Mulhern were players of the game for their
outstanding effort.
Game three saw the St Helena
displaying their wares at a rare night game, on the turf and under
the lights. Tyler Rongione finally notched the Wagdogs first tally
of the season on a strike from 10 yards out, beating the St. Francis
keeper to his right. The St Helena defense kept two dangerous St
Francis strikers in check most of the evening, but not before they
managed to push a loose ball into the net. The 1-1 tie kept St
Helena undefeated. Julie McGowan and Tyler Rongione received
player of the game honors. Especially strong performances were also
put in by Patrick Finlay at midfield and Julianne Kerwood on
defense.
In game #4, St Helena was matched
against an undefeated St. Philips side. The Wagdogs rose to the
occasion and once again put in a sterling defensive effort for a 0-0
draw. Sam McKenzie played an inspired keeper, repeatedly stopping St
Philips shots and punting the ball past midfield. Brendan Koch
frustrated would be scorers with some hard nosed tackling in the
middle and shared player of the game honors with Sam. The
bend-but-not-break defense had solid play throughout the ranks,
although Evan, Conall, and David DeRosier caught the coachs' eyes.
St Helena's best scoring chances came on clever breaks by Tyler
Rongione and Cassie O'Brien. But history would not be denied as the
Wagdogs remained undefeated and winless.
Game #5 saw St
Helena's offense come to life as the Wagdogs broke through for
their first win. After an own goal by St. Mary's, Andrew Schieve
found the back of the net with a 10-yard blast. Chip Byrne
tallied his first goal, by "chipping"
a loose ball past the keeper. Kevin McCall got the final tally
by directing a nice feed from Tyler Semchuck into the lower left
corner. Sam McKenzie and the defense recorded its third shutout
in the 4-0 win.
Game #6 against
non-league opponent St. Aloysius was postponed due to inclement
weather.
The Wagdogs made it
two wins in a row, posting a 2-0 victory over Visitation (White)
in Game #7. Andrew Schieve
converted a nice feed from John Shields to put St Helena's up
early. Combining some skillfull ball handling with an
accurate left foot, Andrew
gave St Helena's an
insurance goal.
Brendan Koch and an array of midfielders including Julie McGowan
and Patrick Finlay dominated the
middle. The rock solid
defense, included Conall
Loughlin, David DeRosier, Evan Holder, and Chase Tantalo and kept
White off the board for their fourth shutout.
St. Helena played a
tough game against a talented St Teresa squad, but suffered
their first defeat of the
season in game #8. In a tight, well-played contest, St
Teresa managed to slip in the game's only goal late in the first
half. St. Helena created a few quality scoring opportunities,
but could not managed to
find the final finish. Once again the midfield and defense
played a strong solid game.
In the ninth game of
the season, the Wagdogs found some new offensive punch. Nick
Kelly's beautiful chip of a loose ball opened the scoring for
St. Helena. Later in the first half, Kevin Pickell blasted a
shot into the upper left corner from 10-yards out. On field
sources suggest that Patrick Finlay deserves an assist on the
goal. On a fine individual effort, Brendan Koch broke past the
Holy Family defense and got
off a strong shot that beat the keeper cleanly to
his left . Chip Byrne played a strong game as keeper. The
defense's bid for a fifth shutout came up five minutes short, as
Holy Family scored a nice goal from 16 yards out late
in the 2nd half.
In Game #10 St.
Helena showed their grit. After falling behind 1-0 midway
through the first half to a talented Epiphany squad, the Wagdogs
fought back for a tough 2-1 win. Chip Byrne was the catalyst on
offense providing two splendid goals. A third "Chip" shot
appeared to be in, but was ruled a cross bar and almosted tucked
in by a well-positioned Tyler Semchuck. Brendan Koch once again
clogged up the middle to twart Epihany's attack, and took one
for the team early in the game. The back line led by Evan Holder
and David Matozzo, together with Julie McGowan, David DeRosier,
Danny Kappler, Ryan Loftus, and Nick Kelly, played strong
defense, sticking to their marks and clearing loose balls. The 3
points for the win puts St. Helena in a strong position for a
playoff spot.
