I have found it is a good idea to place the water bottle in a Ziploc bag or some other plastic bag to protect the books if you are putting the water bottle in your child’s school bag.  The best of water bottles have leaked. Please label the bottles with your child’s name.

*-Beach Towel- to be used at lunch

– 3 Masks- 1 to be worn, 2 backups kept in child’s schoolbag. It is best to store the masks in a brown paper bag. Please label the masks with your child’s name. The children are required to wear a mask while in the building.

– Extra sharpened pencils- We won’t have use of the classroom pencil sharpener at this time.

– 1 old T-shirt for messy art activities- Please write your child’s name on the shirt.

– 2 Individual tissue packs -We shall not have a classroom tissue box at this time.

– 1 Activity book- for use during rainy day recesses. Please write your child’s name on the book.

– 1 or 2 picture books – Your child should always have an extra book in his/her

desk everyday.  There will be a silent reading period during the school

day. Please write your child’s name on their personal books.  Please send

in new books frequently to replace books the children have finished.

We shall not use the classroom library at this time.

-Roll of Paper Towels.  We will need paper towels to clean the children’s desks

and chairs each day. The desks will be cleaned often throughout the day.

-1 Package of Brown Paper Bags – for the children to store their masks.

*Thank you to the Home and School Board for providing break-away lanyards for every student to wear so they don’t lose their masks.

-Clear Contact Paper- Please do not send these rolls to school.  You need the contact paper to cover your child’s workbooks.  Thank you so much.

Thank you!

Fee for School Supplies Already Provided

Please send $20.50 in an envelope marked “School Supplies” with your child’s name on it by Monday, September 21.  This will cover the cost of 5 copybooks, an art box, subscription to scholastic news, subscription to Science Spin, and a Scholastic Election Skill Book which have been provided for your child’s use.   In addition, please send in $20.00 in a separate envelope marked “Art Fee”.  All checks should be made out to Saint Helena School.  Please be sure the envelopes sent in with your child have my name on them also, so they are not mistakenly sent to the office.  I record your name when the money has been sent to school.  Thank you.

-$1.00 – art box already purchased for your child’s use in the classroom

-$9.25 – 5 copybooks at $1.85 each (2 of these books will be saved for the second     half of the year)

-$10.25- subscription to Scholastic News (a weekly current events newsletter) and

Subscription to Science Spin. This year we shall also get a Scholastic Election Skill Book.

-$20.00 – Art Fee

Nametags

Please have your child wear a nametag for the first 2 weeks of school stating his/her way of transportation home.  If your child takes a bus home, please remember to include the district (ex. Wissahickon) and the bus number.  There are many buses for each district.

Books

Books will be sent home to be covered the next few nights and week.  Please cover all workbooks with clear contact.  Please label each workbook on the front cover with your child’s first and last name.  Please note- there are two Reading Workbooks which look identical (Volume 1 and Volume 2).  Copybooks do not need to be covered, although they do seem to last longer when covered. The books are easily recognizable and well protected in this manner.  As we receive additional workbooks for the children, they will be sent home to be covered as well.

Backpacks and Lunch Boxes

The closet will not be used at this time. Your child’s backpack and lunchbox will be kept at his/her desk.  Please do not allow your child to bring any kinds of toys to school.  Please monitor your child’s backpack for items which could be a distraction in class.

Dismissal

All children must be dismissed in line.  Please do not come into the building at dismissal time. Please be sure to read the Task Force’s guidelines for dismissal.  When families are involved, the children will follow the youngest child’s instructions.  All Kindergarten children and their siblings will be dismissed from the back parking lot when traveling by car.

Children will not be permitted to take alternate forms of transportation than what you have stated on the bottom portion of this letter, unless I receive a note stating a change in transportation.  If you forget a note, please call the office and I will get the message.

If your child is visiting someone else after school, I would like a note from both children’s parents.  Please include the transportation to be used.  This is for your child’s protection.  Please note- a child may not ride on any other district’s bus than the one in which he/she lives.  (ex.  If your child lives in the Methacton School District, he/she may not ride on a Wissahickon bus.  These are the districts’ rules.)

Virtual Learning

I am so happy to still have the opportunity to teach some children even though they cannot be with us in person.  They will still be an important part of our class.

Please make sure your child has a quiet place, free from distractions, for their virtual school day.  Our goal is to Live Stream whenever we are giving direct instruction for ELA, Math, and Religion.  Sessions will range in time from 10 minutes to 40 minutes.  During each session, the goal is to give your child a chance to participate answering questions, and asking questions when needed.

A virtual schedule is still being created at this time.  Teaching/learning in a blended learning environment is complex and will have its challenges.  Please be patient as we work together on any timing and technical issues we may encounter.

Zoom Expectations/Rules

  1. Your child must be sitting at a desk or table.  They may not be lounging in bed, on a couch, in a car, etc.
  2. Your child should not have any distractions around them- no animals toys, electronics, etc.
  3. Your child needs to use the bathroom, eat, and drink BEFORE each session.
  4. Your child must have all materials ready BEFORE entering the session- the correct books, sharpened pencils, etc.
  5. When your child enters the Zoom session, he/she has to enter as his/her own name or a family name.  For the safety of your child, I will not allow anyone in the Zoom unless it is a first grade name.
  6. While I am teaching, your child’s microphone needs to be muted.
  7. They may NOT unmute themselves until they are instructed to do so.
  8. They may not type in the chat.
  9. If they have a question, they can raise their hand.

Thank you for your cooperation with all of this.

T-Folder

The T-Folder is what I use to send home classroom information, notes, tests, etc.  Please make sure the T-Folders are returned to me, along with all tests and quizzes signed by you, by the next day.

H- Folder

The H- Folder will be sent home every night.  Worksheets completed during each day will also be contained in the H- Folder.  The completed pages may be kept at home.  Homework should be returned by the next day.

Homework Procedures

Homework for the week will be posted on our class’ page on the SHS website.  Any loose homework sheets your child needs to complete will be placed in the H folder by your child.  All homework must be completed every night.  Your child’s homework will provide reinforcement of daily work and will nurture a sense of responsibility in your child.  Please sign your child’s homework every night.  Your signature on all homework is an indication to me it has been supervised and done neatly and completely.  If you observe your child having a problem with his/her homework, please inform me with a note.  Your child is responsible for turning in their homework each day.

Homework should take about 30 minutes to complete each night.

Math Facts

Please review the assigned work each night.  I strongly suggest you purchase or make flash cards review with your child.  Mastery of these math facts is very important.

Absence

A note must be brought in the day of your child’s return stating the date of absence and the reason for absence.  This letter is in addition to calling the school on the day your child is absent.

If you foresee your child being absent for a long period of time, please contact me well in advance.

Missed work will be sent home, on the day your child returns, to be completed with you at home.

Gym

Your child’s Gym day is on Thursdays.

Discipline

I will give you a call or write you a note to inform you if I find your child is having difficulty or if their work is not being completed.

Please let me know if your child is going through something unusual at home so I am aware and may act accordingly.

Scholastic Books

Scholastic Book orders are placed online only.  Please do not send in a check.  A certain deadline date will be given for each order.  Directions to place an order are written for you at the end of the homework site.

Lunch

Lunch will be a new experience for some children.  A note in their lunch box can make this easier for some children.  Please remember, our school is COMPLETELY NUT FREE at this time.

Please be sure your child is able to open anything you pack for lunch independently.  Capris Suns, gogurts, lunchables, some fruit snacks, and some plastic containers for food can be difficult for children to open by themselves.  Of course, if your child is able to open up these food packages, feel free to send them with your child for lunch. At this time, they need to be able to open up their own lunches and snacks.

Children should have a beach towel to sit on at lunch time.  Please remember to put your child’s name on the towel.  Sitting on the beach towel will remind the children to remain socially distanced while they eat.  We will be eating outside whenever we are able.  Beach towels will be sent home each week to be washed.

Snacks

Children are welcome to bring in their own nutritious snack each day.  Please remember all snacks must be completely NUT FREE. The water fountains are not being used at this time. Soft pretzels will not be sold at this time.

Birthdays

Birthdays are always welcome.  At this time, I will announce on the Homework Site when a child will be celebrating his/her birthday.  I will assume the celebration is on the exact day, unless you tell me otherwise.  If your child’s birthday is on a Saturday or a Sunday or on a day off from school, please let me know what day you would like your child to celebrate. The birthday child will bring in his/her own special treat that day.  The other children in the class are welcome to bring in a special treat from home to eat on the day of the celebration.  Birthday children will not bring in treats for the whole class at this time.  We shall all sing “Happy Birthday” to the birthday child and enjoy our own special treat from home.

School Website

Please check our school website for calendar changes and events happening at SHS.  Please check our class page for homework and other helpful reminders.

Show and Tell

Please do not allow your child to bring any kinds of toys to school.  There will not be a show and tell period in first grade.

Names

Please place your child’s name on everything, especially all of the gym clothing and school sweaters.
